Stance matchups are the closest thing MMA has to a structural edge. Southpaws remain overrepresented at the top of multiple divisions relative to their share of the population, and the reasons are mechanical, not mystical.

In open-stance matchups, the rear-hand highway — straight left against orthodox opponents — lands at meaningfully higher rates than the equivalent cross in closed-stance fights.

The lead-foot battle

Almost everything in an open-stance fight flows from whose lead foot is outside. Win the foot position and your power side aligns with the opponent's centre line; lose it and you're punching across yourself all night.

Fighters who consciously fight for outside foot position win open-stance rounds at a significantly higher rate. Watch tape with only the feet on screen and you can often call the round without seeing a single punch.
